FORMATION / TRAINING :Il arrive au Canada avec sa famille en 1909. En 1926, il prend ses premières leçons de peinture et de dessin à Edmonton et en 1927, il part pour la France où il suit des cours de peinture à Paris. Pendant son séjour, il se lie d’amitié avec Clarence Gagnon qui l’encourage à se consacrer entièrement à son art.
René Richard arrived in Canada with his family in 1909. In 1926, he took his first painting and drawing lessons in Edmonton, and, in 1927, he left for France to study painting in Paris. During his stay, he became friends with Clarence Gagnon who encouraged him to become a fulltime artist.
CARRIÈRE / CAREER :René Richard revient au Canada en 1930 et il commence sa vie de trappeur. Il rapporte de ses randonnées des centaines de dessins. En 1942, il s’installe à Baie St-Paul. Il expose régulièrement à Québec et à Montréal. En 1952, il retourne dans le Grand Nord. En 1967, le Musée du Québec présente une exposition individuelle de son œuvre et dix ans plus tard, une exposition rétrospective. Il illustre Menaud Maître Draveur de Félix-Antoine Savard. En 1980, René Richard fait une importante donation de ses œuvres à l’Université Laval.
René Richard returned to Canada in 1930 and took up trapping once more. He returned from his long trips with hundreds drawings. In 1942, he settled to Baie Saint-Paul and exhibited regularly in Quebec City and Montreal. In 1952, Richard went back to the North. Il 1967, the Musée du Québec presented a solo exhibition and ten years later retrospective centered on his work. He illustrated Menaud maître draveur, by Félix-Antoine Savard. In 1980, René Richard donated many of his works to the Université Laval.
DISTINCTIONS / HONOURS :A la fin de sa vie, René Richard est élu à l’Académie royale canadienne et en 1973, il reçoit l’Ordre du Canada.
Towards the end of his life, René Richard was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and, in 1973, he received the Order of Canada.
